STATEMENT/PROFILE
Artist
with strong background in clay and glaze formulation who handbuilds
using coil, slab and pinch methods to form one-of-a-kind pieces.
Specialties in glazing are low tech formulas and use of the
oldest glaze known to man, terra sigillata, fitting the one-of-a-kind
clay designs produced in home studio. Her work is shown throughout
the Southeast, is in private collections across the United
States and Europe and part of permanent museum collections
in Asheville, NC and Wilmington, NC.
McNeill's terra sigillata glaze, meaning sealed earth, is
an ancient glaze developed, in particular, by the Greeks.
Despite its Latin name, it formed the basic decorating medium
on classical Greek pottery from early times and became the
basis for the familiar black and red decorated ware. It was
used by the Romans for pottery made especially for the patricians
and was known as samian ware. Many other cultures used terra
sigillata techniques for sealing and beautifying the surfaces
of pottery wares. It has been in use for thousands of years
and was also used by the Pre-Columbian cultures of Central
and South America.
While pieces glazed with terra sigillata are somewhat waterproof,
they should be used with respect to the fact that this delicate
glaze needs to be protected from liquid submersion or liquid
use, unless so stated on the piece of ware, and should last
for centuries to come. Visit McNeill's website for complete
glaze formula and process.
